How to Create a Cowboy Halloween Costume

If your little "buckaroo" wants to dress up like a cowboy for Halloween, putting a costume together is fairly easy. With some jeans, a vest, a bandana and cowboy hat and boots, you are ready to learn how to create a cowboy Halloween costume using the following how-to steps.
First: Work with existing clothing
Jeans are perfect for your little cowboy's costume. An older pair works best, and the more holes, the better. You might even sew a patch or two on the jeans for a worn look. A flannel or plain cotton plaid shirt lying around your son's closet is the perfect piece for the top part of the costumes as well.
Second: Make a vest
Take an old blue jean or cotton jacket, and cut off the sleeves to make a cowboy vest. Either hem the sleeves, or leave them ragged for a more rugged look. The vest does not have to button, leaving it open adds a more authentic look. Use an old black shoestring for a bolero tie to complete the neckline.
Third: Cowboy boots and hat
One of the most critical components of the Halloween costume is the footwear. Every cowboy has to wear cowboy boots. Try to find these at your local Goodwill store or, if that fails, most toy stores carry them as costume accents. Whether real leather or an imitation, the boots are a must for the cowboy look. The other must-have component is the cowboy hat. Again, a Goodwill is the perfect place to find one, and if the size is not perfect, do not worry. Your cowboy can wear his hat hanging down his back, held by the chin strap.
