A Brief History of Cowboy Boots

You may associate cowboy boots with riders from the Wild West, and this is indeed where they originated. Read the following article for a brief history of cowboy boots and the reasons behind their specific design.

What is a cowboy boot?

A cowboy boot is generally a boot with no laces, a heel of about an inch and a rounded or pointed toe. It generally comes up to mid-calf. The boots are normally made from cowhide but are also made from a number of other animal skins.

Where did the inspiration for cowboy boots come from?

The first cowboys are traced back to Spain, and cowboy culture was heavily influenced by the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico. These cultural influences combined with the design of military boots worn by cavalry riders at the time led to the basic design of cowboy boots. With the Industrial Revolution, mass production made the boots widely available and allowed the production of more decorative styles.

The reasons behind the design of cowboy boots

The pointed toe of the cowboy boot made it easy to insert and remove one's foot from the stirrup of a Western saddle. The heel helped prevent the rider's foot from sliding through the saddle and potentially getting stuck. The height of the boot and lack of laces made it easy to slip out of the boot if the rider was ever dragged by his horse; it also protected his legs from snakes and other hazards.

The roper

The "roper" style cowboy boot was later developed specifically for the modern rodeo rider. It features a shorter length, a very low and squared-off heel, laces to hold them in place and a rounder toe.

It is the history behind cowboy boots that has brought this footwear style where it is today. Cowboy boots are now available in a limitless range of decorations, colors and animal skins.
